Basecamp: The Philosophy

I hope you had a great weekend my

weekend was pretty good thinking of a

lot of stuff and I was actually thinking

about this episode and how I was gonna

attack it basically so this week I'm

going to be concentrating on doing

videos about base camp and why I believe

base camp is probably the best tool for

you to use now this episode is actually

called the philosophy now the whole

point of this episode and reason why I

called it is how tech minimalism and

Basecamp kind of merit it can emerge and

marry each other if that makes any sense

so tech minimalism as you know and

hopefully you've watched a few of my

videos is about using less tech is about

simplifying your workflow now I've been

like this throughout my life and but I

never realized this up until about two

three years ago and that's how my

company my new company tech minimalism

started how I do this coaching and stuff

as my past company Mac junkie was

basically helping people with their

Mac's whether it was a granny to a

company and helping them simplify their

Mac and the way they work now the the

the thing is throughout that period and

it's been about 13 years or so I've

noticed how people work working with

individuals professionals and teams

specifically teams I've noticed that

they're kind of disjointed in so many so

many ways and I was to actually to a

certain degree with the tool set that I

was using so I was on a mission to try

to simplify it because that's who I am

that's kind of my fabric I'm the person

that wants to find that least friction

in what I do want to find the easiest

way to do it because I want to spend

time to do the things I enjoy doing and

I came across Basecamp now I've had a

love-hate relationship not hate but

that's the same love-hate relationship

with base camp I've used there over the

past two or so years on and off and the

reason why it was on and off because I

was using other tools as well things

like a sauna and Trello and todoist and

things and so on and I've recently

relatively recently come back to base

camp because the fact that I use these

other apps I've realized that base camp

is kind of the it's woven in the fabric

of how I work it's kind of like the

company and the ethos that they have but

not only that but just the way the app

works it's so insanely simple and that

actually that was one of the reasons I

stopped using because I want this

doesn't do anything with what there's no

there's nothing here but over time over

the period of those two years I've come

to realize that that is actually what

tech minimalism is to take away all the

crap and the fluff that you just don't

need you know all these other tools like

asana and Trello and to do okay but the

ones that I was using they're amazing

tools they have amazing features but

once you start actually working once I

started working with these tools I

realized I wasn't using those features

as much as I thought I was so then I

stood back and started realizing well

what do I need what do I actually need

what what am I doing here and being a

coach in a trainer and so on the one

feature that I wanted one main feature

that I wanted was the easiest way to

communicate with my clients now don't

get me wrong

others do it as well but they don't do

it as well as I wanted it to do so I was

looking around so that was one feature

but once I found that one feature I've

realized that I all these other features

that Basecamp had

worked so much better than I thought

originally because I was actively using

it so recently I as I said I went back

to base camp and I found that all the

features that I actually wanted as I

said wasn't necessary so I cut back on

all the things that I really wanted to

do and I found that I was saving so much

more time did I want to do and and it

just so worked with the with the whole

ethos of what tech minimalism is about

now in Basecamp you have things like

group chat you have things like the

message board the task list the

automatic check-ins which are a godsend

if you're a coach it's it's such an

amazing feature that you have all of

these features that these other apps

have but they've basically scaled them

back so you're not fighting with the

features and you're actually just

getting to the data that you actually

need as I said later on this week I'll

probably be doing some videos and

showing you what's going on but in this

video I just wanted to go through as to

the reason why I chose Basecamp for the

foundation of my business now Basecamp

is a project management tool it does it

insanely well it does it really really

well the problem with it is it's not the

problem with it the problem is that

people tend to pick up at all doesn't

have to be Basecamp just any tool they

don't understand it because they have

they haven't learnt it I guess they

haven't learnt they haven't implemented

it within their workflow let's put it

that way

they haven't implemented it well they've

just started using it started dumping

stuff in there and in suddenly realize

this ain't working the way we want to so

then they ditch it and then they go back

to the tools that they were using now

with sprite cloud they actually said

they they tried Basecamp and a few other

people have had this

conversation within the past few weeks

they've tried at all base camp they

thought it was too simple they tried to

use it for a week or so and they they

stopped now I don't know how long base

camp used it for I don't know if they

had somebody in to actually show them I

don't know if they implemented it and

connected it with other things I'm

really not sure about that but my

experience from other people is that

they've tried it for a week or two and

they've put stuff in they didn't like it

and they stopped using it well that

could happen with anything and any tour

and in fact it does happen with other

tools I'm just talking about base camp

here so the philosophy is that it

actually does work as a tech minimalism

tall and it's incredible for a you know

I teach people to stop using technology

and with base camp

it actually takes away the friction of

using so many other tools now don't get

me wrong you might need specific tools

for your specific job and there are

parts of the company but it's not the

foundation now as I said base camp is a

project management touring it does it

really really well that's what it is but

I kind of tend to look at it as a kind

of more of the workspace more of a

foundation I talk about foundational the

IT foundation of your business and I and

it works insanely well as a foundation

to your business but on top of that it

does all these other all of these other

things so well way better actually than

all the tools relevant you know the

respective tools that it's trying to

replace things like slack things like

trellis things like asana things like

Google Docs I've got to go to a stage

where I've realized I don't need Google

Docs anymore it's not something that I

need so I'm probably going to get rid of

my G sway account because I found all

the things that I was doing on all of

these other tools can be replaced with

one tool in essence everything is in one

place also the thing with Basecamp is

that every

pretty much everything is commentable so

you can comment on absolutely everything

which basically means everything is

transparent you don't have to have so

many meetings all the time you don't

have to have that tap on the shoulder

hey George have you got this it's all in

one place people just go there and find

it but it's such a calm even though it's

like loads and loads of information it's

such a calm area to work in that again

it's it just says I've put it on my

website it takes tech minimalism to a

whole new level and I'm so happy that

it's there I'm actually so happy that

I've refound it and actually using it

the way I should have used it a couple

of years ago in fact anyway it's a bit

of a rent episode this this one I just

wanted to talk about the reasoning

behind it if you have any questions or
